Traditional African Religion Underfire?

As arrests and investigations rise across the country, in particular in Florida and California, we have to ask ourselves – is it animal rights, western intolerance or religious bigotry? Or maybe it’s our fault. Please share your opinions via the poll and comments section. To visitors that practice other religions or are here for social or political reasons, you’re IP addresses are being recorded. Please be polite and don’t abuse our website.

I am Buddhist and vegan but am interested in African culture and came across this site. I hope it is not over-stepping to post my reflections upon reading the articles this refers to.

While I strictly do not kill and would never practice animal sacrifice, I do not support the governments actions against people practicing traditional religions. The horrific conditions of factory farms VASTLY overshadow these folks in animal cruelty. Eating chicken from KFC is likely much worse for animals then eating chicken after a Yoruba ceremony.

The real reason these folks are getting arrested is two fold: 1. racism: that which is truly African is seen as evil in the subconscious of most americans. 2. animal sacrifice brings the violence out in the open, while KFC keeps it well behind closed doors. Most americans don’t really give a damn about animals, they just don’t want to be forced to think about where their meat comes from.

If this issue comes up in the animal rights community where I live, I will make sure to defend the practices of Traditional Religions and keep activists focused where the most suffering is occurring: the meat industry.

Thx for your comments. Be aware that the animals in Traditional African rituals DO know what’s going on and give their permission to be used in a such way. This very much like the covenant that exists between the Buffalo and Native America. This is a reciprocal relationship that is not viewed as violent by animals or devotees.

Traditional Afrikan Religion is under attack here in Uganda and elsewhere in Africa. White churches that have incorporated African traditions are gaining through nonsense. Is it a war, yes. African traditional religion is demonized to the point that anyone who practices it openly cannot get a decent job in the government. You are penalized everywhere. The word witchcraft is used to described any traditional African religion, which we all know is not an Afrikan word. We think the Afrikan God and gods are angry because we have turned our backs and accepted that which does not represent us. We do not acknowledge those that has been around for thousands and thousands of years before the missionaries. We also see what accepting the white man’s religion has done to Afrika. This is the basis of all the violence, corruption and lack of morals. Afrikans have forgotten their gods, their rules for living and this is the result. While we personally do not believe in the sacrifice of animals, we have been told by Afrikan priests representing Afrikan gods, ancestors, spirits, etc., that this is what they want. They do not want the blood or body of man. For this reason, we find it hard to believe that people honestly practicing traditional Afrikan religion are involved in child sacrifice. Another way to demonize Afrikan religion. Animals usually sacrifice in this manner (to please the gods) are eaten immediately after. No one goes hungry and nothing is wasted. I would prefer this than some of the practices we see in the West.
