Is it possible educate one's self without enlisting in a school? Yes. But for best results, we follow the path that has been shown to work best. You don't need a shrine right away. But in time, it makes sense as it deepens the relationship and demonstrates commitment. There are some things that we do for our ancestors that can only be done at their shrine.

We never "pick" Ancestors. They pick us. We ask the good ones to remain close and the "bad ones" to go the opposite way. lol Do you have an Ancestor Shrine? Have you gotten a divination reading from an Orisa Priest?

My question is how do you pick ancestors when your family is not close and you don't know of anyone who died that was worth a dime.

If one's intent is to invoke the Egun I would tend to think it best to use Oriki. But, it's not a secret that some people only use a standard invocation and then begin the rest of their dialogue using their birth language. I've found that Oriki and Iwure are fuel injection - they push the point further, open the door faster, establish the connection stronger, etc.
